2/27/2018 WOUNDED PARKland student will not return to her high school but will still get her diplomaRead NowOn February 14, 2018 19 year old Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people and injured 14 others at Stoneman Douglas Highschool in Parkland, Florida, which is now one of the deadliest school shootings. One survivor named Samantha Fuentes, Senior who now walks with a cane due to a bullet piercing and scraping different areas of her body has now decided not to return back to Stoneman High despite the returning date of most students being February 28, 2018. Samantha's states that "I want to be a part of Stoneman Douglas and I want to live out the rest of my high school career normally. But there's no such thing as normal anymore." This is a sad factor that every student at Stoneman High must face now. Samantha has decided that while she will be taking online classes she will also find time to travel and speak on gun control. Throughout this article author Jason Hanna kept a conversational tone because the article was mostly due to the fact that everything in the article was based on quotes from Samantha Fuentes such as "As I'm recovering and taking my online courses, that's when I'd like to take the chance to travel, and speak to large audiences, spread my message." "Curriculum is never going to resume as normal for the rest of the year." This article strongly appealed to ethos because Samantha was directly affected by the schools shooting which makes her a credible source. Another strong appeal in this article would be pathos because of this tragic situation one can not help, but to sympathize. The article mentions her being a senior in highschool which many people can relate to especially her being a modern day student and how these events effect many.

"Day Zero" Capetown which is the 2nd largest city in South Africa s currently undergoing a crisis in which they have only 3 months until all their water runs out. Currently locals have no choice but to be very frugal with the amount of water that they use in order to bring some ease to the issue. The drought was caused by three main things "The worst drought in more than a century, which has pushed Cape Town's water scarcity into a potentially deadly horizon
The metro area's population, which is 4 million and growing quickly. A rapidly changing climate." The government starting February 1st will be putting in place a "50 liters per day day policy" in which residents are limited to 50 liters of water per day. To most 50 liters of water per day does not sound that drastic, but a picture shown below depicts exactly how much water it takes to do everyday necessities. Residents have resorted to saving all the water used throughout the day in buckets or other containers for later use. Even after this crisis has gotten international attention there has yet to be a resolution in sight. The author of this article Paul P. Murphy maintained a very concerning and informational tone throughout this article. The concerning tone was given off by the author using words like "frightening" and "issues" which show that he is somewhat fearful of the situation at hand. The informational tone was seen through the author simply stating facts such as what caused the lack of water and giving picture examples of what exactly Cape Town residents were doing to cope. He often gave examples and quotes straight from Cape Town residents "Unwashed hair is now a sign of social responsibility," resident Darryn Ten told CNN." The quote helps in an appeal to pathos and allows people reading the article to find a way to relate and become empathetic. Washing hair is something that most people around the world do on a daily basis, so someone not being able to do something as simple as that really causes readers to reflect on how grateful they should be and their advantages in certain aspects of life compared to others. The author brings up the fact that those who are rich or have the funds to leave Cape Town are doing so immediately but the elderly and poor have no choice, but to stay in this city even with low amounts of water and recycled water being unsafe to drink, but for these groups of people that is their only option.
Nursing home death: 'All they had to do was call 911,' family says By Ralph Ellis, CNN The title of this article is "All they had to do was call 911", and throughout the article he writes about each situation and how it could have been prevented which shows that he sides with the family. For each of the paragraph titles the Author chose a phrase from a quote that the people related to this case said, but he only chose phrases that gave emotion to the writing, for example he chose "Absolutely Stunning" which gave that paragraph a very shocked tone. He also used "Deepest Sympathy" which came from a statement from the Rehabilitation center that was allegedly responsible for the deaths of some of the people residing there, so he used this a s a heading to show even the people responsible for this tragedy feel bad, and so should everyone else. The purpose of this article was to explain why this rehabilitation center was given a lawsuit and why the family was right for creating a lawsuit against them. At the beginning of the article it starts off with Erika Navarro's last words to her grandfather I told him, 'Grandpa, I'll be coming in a week to celebrate our birthdays and to see you again,' "..."He just said, 'Hurry up and get here so we can sit down chat and play dominoes.' " The author used that conversation to appeal to pathos because it brings up emotion especially to people who have had a loved one die and know exactly what type of pain Erika is going through, and to know that this could have been prevented makes people even more emotional. This creates an emotional attachment to this story right from the beginning. The author includes that the Rehabilitation center had deleted voice mails and refuse to give out details on what those voice mails said. This supports the authors stance on this lawsuit because why would a company need to delete and not give out information if they had nothing to hide.
